Commercial Interior Design

Matthews Rea designs commercial interiors for developers, operators and businesses, alongside our residential practice. The studio is based in Cobham, Surrey, and we work across Surrey, Hampshire and London.

Interiors That Have a Job to Do

A commercial interior is judged differently from a private home. It has to work for the people using it every day, stand up to far heavier use, satisfy regulations, and still make the right impression on whoever walks through the door. Getting one of those right at the expense of the others is not a success.

We design with all of it in view from the start. Layout and circulation, lighting through the working day, acoustics, the durability of every finish specified, and the practical realities of maintenance and cleaning.

Developers and Show Homes

A good proportion of our commercial work is for property developers, where the interior is doing the selling. We have delivered schemes including Kensington Development Apartment I and Apartment II, taking each from concept through to a fully specified and installed interior. You can read more on our show homes and property developers page.

Developer work runs to its own rhythm. Launch dates do not move, several units often need to feel related without being identical, and the specification has to be deliverable at scale rather than one-off. We plan for that rather than treating it as a complication.

Workplaces and Communal Spaces

We also design communal and amenity spaces, from clubrooms and function rooms through to the shared areas of residential developments. These are the spaces that decide how a building feels to belong to, and they are frequently the ones given the least thought.

Our work for the Whitehill and Bordon Regeneration Company covered a clubroom, function room and communal areas, delivered from first brief through to implementation.

What the Service Covers

Interior architecture and design, technical drawings, full furniture, fixtures and equipment, bespoke joinery, custom furniture design and procurement. We are comfortable joining a project where an architect, contractor or project manager is already appointed, and working as part of an existing team.
