Matthews Rea is an award-winning studio working on super-prime residential interiors. We design private houses, estates and apartments for clients who expect the interior to be considered to the same standard as the architecture, and who are prepared to give it the time that takes.
What Super-Prime Actually Asks For
At this level the brief is rarely about taste alone. The building is usually substantial, often listed or architecturally significant, and the interior has to hold together across a great many rooms without becoming repetitive or losing its thread.
Programmes are long, frequently running well over a year. Several consultants are involved. Decisions made early have consequences eighteen months later, which is why we draw and specify in detail rather than leaving things to be resolved on site.
Bespoke as Standard
Very little at this level comes off a shelf. Joinery is designed around the room rather than fitted into it, furniture is frequently made to our drawings, and storage is expected to disappear into the architecture. We design all of it in house and specify it properly, so what is agreed at design stage is what is built.
Working With Your Other Consultants
Most of our super-prime projects involve an architect, a contractor and often a project manager, a lighting consultant and a landscape designer. We are comfortable as part of that team, and the interior architecture work we do frequently begins before the building is finished, which is when it has the most influence.
